Do you know the difference between them? - A pun consists on making fun exploiting different meanings of a word (trocadilho) and a joke is something said by someone intended to cause laughter, especially with a punchline (piada). Let's see some jokes and puns:
Among other meanings, bright means intelligent or reflecting a lot of light - Entre outros significados, bright significa inteligente ou que reflete muita luz.
I was wondering why the ball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. - Eu estava me perguntando por que a bola estava ficando maior. Daí ela me atingiu.
"I have a split personality", said Tom, being frank. - Eu tenho dupla personalidade, disse Tom, sendo franco.
frank is a name and it’s translations in Portuguese is "franco" - frank é um nome e sua tradução para o português (neste caso) é "franco".
In English the pun may be fun because 'on the other hand' assumes different meanings it's either talking about the hand, literally; or the expression which means opposed facts - Em inglês, o trocadilho pode ser divertido, porque 'on the other hand' assume diferentes significados, seja falando sobre a mão, literalmente; ou a expressão que significa fatos opostos.
It's hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally. - É difícil explicar trocadilhos para cleptomaníacos porque eles sempre levam as coisas literalmente.
A police officer just knocked on my door and told me my dogs are chasing people on bikes. That's ridiculous. My dogs don’t even own bikes. - O policial acabou de bater na minha porta e dizer que meus cachorros estavam correndo atrás de pessoas de bicicleta. Meus cachorros nem tem bicicleta.
Lucy: Which hand is better to write with? – Qual mão é a melhor para escrever?
Peter: Neither, it's best to write with a pen. – Nenhuma, é melhor escrever com uma caneta.
Peter: Why do bicycles fall over? – Por que as bicicletas caem?
Lucy: Because they are too tired! – Porque elas estão muito cansadas.
Too tired has the same pronunciation of two-tired. How ever the first means the bike is really tired and the second relates to the number of tires/wheel it has (2) - "Too tired" tem a mesma pronúncia de "two-tired". No entanto, a primeira significa que a bicicleta está realmente cansada e a segunda se refere ao número de pneus / roda (2).
